In plain language, the homes getting picked up were generally smaller than the homes still on the market. That does not mean every first purchase has to be tiny. It does mean flexibility on layout, size, and finish level can make the difference between entering the market and staying stuck outside it.
Set a hard monthly payment ceiling before you tour anything. Keep smaller homes and attached options in your first pass instead of treating them like backup choices, because that is often where the workable numbers show up. Then move quickly when a home fits your budget and core needs, since the entry-level options that make sense do not benefit from a long period of overthinking.
